I'm really disappointed! I wanted to celebrate my son's 1st birthday by using these to make cute bear cupcakes. When I got and opened them, there was a very strong PLASTIC smell. I'm new to silicone bakeware so I've done lots of research to see if they are safe. There are three criteria:
They should:
1. Be made of 100% silicone
(Nowhere on the package does it say this.)
2. Not have a plastic smell
I've seen and smelled good, expensive silicone bakeware and they don't have a smell. This has a very strong plastic smell similar to another (inexpensive) mini muffin pan I got that I don't know what to do with since I don't plan to use it!
3. Not have white fillers
This means that Wilton used some other materials, probably plastic fillers, to mix with the silicone. From the research I did it said that you should AVOID silicone bakeware with fillers. You can tell this by bending the silicone. If it shows white, it probably has fillers.
I'm pretty convinced this has fillers since 1) it has a strong plastic smell and 2) when you bend it it shows white.
I'm going to return it! I have a lot of Wilton products and really, really wanted to make cute bear cupcakes for my son's birthday...hope that Wilton will use better materials in the future. I give it one star for its cuteness, otherwise I'd rate it ZERO stars!
