We've tried a variety of recipes from the booklet that came the machine now, and we consistently get quite good donuts. I think the reviewers who gave this product such negative reviews weren't using the recipes it came with - those recipes were included for a reason!
Most of our baking is gluten-free, and with simple GF flour substitutions in the basic recipes, I get soft, cakey donuts, which my son and his friends find quite satisfactory. I like that I can be done with the whole project - batter to bake to frost - in about 20 minutes. Much easier than making fried donuts in hot oil, which makes a mess out of the whole kitchen.
My negative about this product would be the "glaze" recipes - they're wet, drippy and sticky, not what you want on finger food. Try either tossing the hot donuts in cinnamon sugar or making a simple chocolate frosting with melted semi-sweet chocolate, a dab of butter and 1 tsp. milk. That worked great.
